Obituary

Harold E. Meyerkord, born August 27, 1913, passed peacefully in his sleep on March 4th 2014 at the age of 100 years, six months. Harold was a kind and giving man who always cared for those around him. He quit school at the age of 14 to go to work and provide for his younger siblings. When his son passed in 1965, Harold helped raise his granddaughter. When he retired from Missouri Portland Cement after 32 years, he volunteered for Christian Northwest Hospital, American Red Cross and The Lions Club. Harold lived life fully and packed many adventures into his years. He loved to travel, and he was a wonderful dancer. He would often say "I've danced from ocean to ocean and coast to coast." Harold loved to entertain people at his home and to attend parties. He never met a stranger and had a great love of animals that he passed along to his family. Because Harold lived to 100, he was preceded in death by almost everyone in his immediate family. He was preceded by his son, Harold Dale Meyerkord, who was killed in the Vietnam War; his wife, Louise; his brothers, Carl, Bill, and Ralph; and his sisters, Ruthie Held and Helen Ackerman. He is survived by his beloved sister, Irene Unnerstall; his granddaughter, Lynne Meyerkord; his caregiver, Amanda Miller; his sisters-in-law, Irene Meyerkord and Alene Gates. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great- nieces and nephews, and great- great-nieces and nephews. Many folks helped Harold live independently including nieces and nephews, Pat and Charlie Thurmond, Greg and Linda Gates, Sharon and Bob Werner, Cass and Sharon Unnerstall, Dave Unnerstall and Candy, and Ronnie Meyerkord. Also many thanks to the folks who helped him while he lived out his life in the Springfield, MO area. "Hey, Hey Bob-ba- reebo", Grandpa. We love you and we miss you.
