IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Harold
Call
March 10, 1932 – December 27, 2018
He leaves his wife of 64 years, Barbara (Spradling) Call, and three sons, Mark Call and his wife Linda of San Luis CO; Mike Call and his wife Sandy of Springfield MO; and William Call and his late wife Nancy of Kingsport TN; and five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He also leaves an older brother Malcolm Call of Gainesville Florida; and many close friends.
Harold was born in Arlington, Texas, the son of O.H. and Lena (Forston) Call. He was attending elementary school in Shawnee, Oklahoma in 1938 when he had his first flight with his older brother and a family friend who was a pilot and owned a two-seat fabric covered airplane. After reaching cruising altitude, the pilot allowed each boy to take their turn handling the plane's yoke which changed Harold's life forever. In 1952, Harold taught his older brother how to fly.
Harold was attending Drury College in Springfield when the draft interrupted his plans and the Army sent him to Austria in G-2, Army Intelligence. It was at this time that he proposed to Barbara, his high school sweetheart, by mail and she flew to Salzburg, Austria where they were married in 1954.
Returning to civilian life, he completed his college education at Rice University and then attended American Flyers School in Fort Worth, Texas to get his commercial pilot license and instrument certification. He worked for Cessna Aircraft in Wichita Kansas and started flying part-time for a ferry service that would deliver parts and airplanes on contract to different areas in the States. He started his own ferry company, Apex Services, International in 1962 to deliver Cessna's products all over the world. During the years that followed he made a total of four trans-Pacific flights, one of which was the first solo, single-engine flight ever made across the Pacific Ocean to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. He conducted eighty-six intercontinental flights to South America and twenty-one trans-Atlantic flights to Europe, Africa, Asia and Indonesia.
Harold and Barbara's family of boys started in Wichita Kansas, continued to Kansas City Kansas and eventually to Springfield Missouri to be closer to both their parents. He was always active in the churches they attended and most recently attended the Living Church of God in Springfield.
His funeral will be at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, with visitation to follow. Burial with full military honors will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 31 at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), PO Box 3816, Oshkosh, WI 54903-3816, to support the Young Eagles.
