Guy Phillip Bates, Sr, DDS, age 90, of Springfield MO passed away at 3.30 pm Wednesday August 7, 2013. Dr. Bates was born in Springfield MO on 1/18/1923 in the family home on Cherry St, the land on which it stood now a part of Missouri State University Campus. While living in Springfield he attended Greenwood Laboratory School. He graduated from Central High School and Southeast Missouri State College in Cape Girardeau, and then from the St Louis University School of Dentistry. While in dental school he married Willa Genevieve Fogle of Aurora, MO. Near the end of World War II and following graduation from dental school, where he was an Ensign in the Navy, he joined the Pacific Fleet as a Lieutenant JG and was stationed in Honolulu HI. He returned to Springfield in 1948 and began a 40 year practice of general dentistry. He was a past president of the Greater Springfield Dental Society and served on the Board of Governors of the Missouri Dental Association. He was a member of and deacon at First and Calvary Presbyterian Church. He served as a volunteer dentist for an Elks Club free childrens' clinic and on the Board of Little Theater. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Arle Haywood Bates and Gretchen Marie Walker Bates. He is survived by the following: Genny, his wife of 69 years; two sons, Guy P Bates Jr DDS (Eda) and Michael J Bates (Joe); grandchildren Debi Moldenhauer (Arnold), Michael D Bates, Shawn P Bates (Anne), Miranda A Phelps, G Ryan Bates (Honora); and eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The funeral is under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. A family graveside service will be held at Eastlawn Cemetery on Saturday August 10 at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald Charities of the Ozarks ToothTruck, or the charity of one's choice.
