Greta Gibson Huff was born October 22, 1920 in Altamont, KS to Bessye Lane and Ira Grier Gibson. She died on May 23, 2010 at the age of 89 following a year long illness. Greta graduated from University of Kansas in 1941 with a Bachelor of Music Education. Greta was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority and a proud alumna. In November 1940 she was crowned KU Homecoming Queen. Greta married Lt. Leo E Huff on March 15, 1942. During WWII while Leo was in Europe, Greta assisted in the Lane family department store. In August 1946, Greta boarded the second boat of dependents to travel to Germany. She joined her husband in Germany for two years, followed by an additional two years spent in Vienna, Austria. While in Vienna, she helped establish and teach classes to help enlisted men earn their eighth grade diploma. They returned to the states in 1950 where Leo was stationed in Little Rock, Arkansas and Greta attended graduate school at the University of Arkansas. In 1954 they moved to Tokyo, Japan where they were stationed for two years. In 1964 she and Leo made their home in Springfield and were actively involved in SMSU Gourmet and Bridge Clubs, Symphony Guild, and their son's school and sport events. They enjoyed all SMSU athletic activities and faithfully followed the Lady Bears. Greta enjoyed genealogy and gourmet cooking. When Leo retired, they traveled extensively to 29 different countries. Greta loved seeing new places, experiencing different cultures, and tasting the local delicacies. She was a member of First and Calvary Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo. She is survived by her son, Jay Lane Huff and wife June; two grandchildren, Adrienne and Austin Lane Huff. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Tuesday, May 25, 2010 in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home with the Reverend Greg Ellis officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Missouri Veterans Cemetery.
