Obituary

Gregory F. Braeckel, 58, of Springfield, passed away on Sunday, September 8th, 2013, in his sleep. Gregory was born in Springfield to the late Richard J. Sr. and Dorothy Anne Braeckel. He is survived by his seven brothers and sisters: Richard, Joe, Mary Anne Darden, Margaret Frank, Denise Owens, David, and Marcus. Greg graduated from St. Agnes High School and attended Missouri State University. He was a loved son, brother, uncle, friend, and confidant to many. He was a caretaker, a great cook, and was always willing to volunteer. He shared his talent and passion for cooking by making wonderful meals and treats for friends on many occasions. He was a voracious reader, which served him well while managing such bookstores as Heritage Books and Barnes and Noble for several years. Because of his knowledge he was able to discuss and debate with the best of them on world issues and politics. Greg also managed Cotter's Pharmacy for several years and worked as a Customer Service Supervisor for Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Through his love of the Springfield community he served in numerous ways on many boards, clubs, and functions. He was a founding member and served on the board of directors for the GLOCENTER. He was a member of APO and of PFLAG. He volunteered for many local functions such as the ADDY'S, PBS, St. Patrick's Day Parade, and the Blues Festival. Greg had a way of bringing people together and was always willing to give a hug, a smile, and often a witty retort; these gifts will be greatly missed. A Memorial Mass will be held for Gregory on Sunday, October 13 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 2818 E. Bennett at 3:00pm. A reception honoring Greg will be held in the Parish Center following the Mass. Online condolences may be left at www.gormanscharpf.com. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to GLOCENTER.ORG, 518 E. Commercial St, Springfield, MO 65801.
