Obituary

Geraldine Curtis Freeman, Springfield, MO, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2016 after a short battle with cancer. Gerry, the daughter of Herbert H. and Effie (Pyatt) Curtis, was born in Hartville, MO, on August 2, 1924. Following graduation from Mansfield High School, she attended Southwest Missouri State Teacher College for a year. Gerry met the love of her life, Don Freeman, in high school. She and Don were married on January 6, 1946. In 1948 they became the proud parents of a son, Michael Curtis Freeman. They lived in Tulsa, OK and Ft. Worth, TX before returning to Missouri in 1954 where Don was needed to help run the family owned Bank of Hermitage after Gerry's father, H.H. Curtis died. Gerry was active in the community and, with partner Gloria Merritt, ran The Wardrobe , a ladies fashion shop in Hermitage. Don and Gerry, along with friends, John and Betty Boller were early developers of subdivisions around the lake. When Don retired from the Bank in 1975, he and Gerry moved to Springfield, MO. They enjoyed spending the winters in South Texas, and she continued to travel there for many years after Don's death in 1976. Gerry continued to make her home in Springfield and worked for a time at Retha's , a ladies boutique. She loved traveling and took her granddaughters on a number of trips. She especially enjoyed cruises and time in Hawaii. She also enjoyed playing bridge, talking politics, reading, eating out, shopping, watching golf and being with family and friends. Gerry was a former member of the Hermitage Baptist Church. After moving to Springfield she joined Campbell United Methodist.

Gerry was preceded in death by her husband, Don Freeman, her parents, and her brother, Bill Curtis and a niece, Sue (Curtis) Chaney.

She is survived by her son and his wife, Mike and Sharlene Freeman, Hermitage, MO; three granddaughters who she loved to spoil: Sherri Freeman Wildoner and husband, Brett, Bixby, Oklahoma, Michelle Freeman Barker and husband, Tim, Lawson, Missouri, and Nikki Freeman Chamberlain and husband, Henry, Lubbock, Texas; four great-grandchildren who brought her much joy: Seth and Aaron Wildoner, Bixby, Oklahoma and Joelle and Preston Barker, Lawson, Missouri; her brother-in-law and his wife, Dale and Kathleen Freeman; and nieces and nephew Ann (Curtis) Linnell, Billie (Curtis) Chaney, Donna (Curtis) Cox and Anthony (Tony) Curtis.
