Obituary

Gerald W. "Bud" Smith, Lt. Col., (Ret.), 94, of Marshfield, MO, passed away Saturday, November 28, 2015, in Mercy Hospital. He was born August 6, 1921 in Aurora, Illinois, the son of Lester Leo and Beatrice Wilson Smith. Following his education at Valley Forge Military Academy, he entered the U.S. Army in 1942 where he served with distinction for more than 20 years, including service in Germany in WWII, Japan and Korea, as well as tours stateside. He was awarded 2 purple hearts, a silver star and multiple other awards. He retired in 1962 at the rank of Lt. Col. He married Maxine Schultz August 15, 1942 and to this union three children were born. His passions were gardening and dancing. He was a member of five dance clubs, MOAA, VFW, Elks, and the Military Order of Purple Heart Chapter 621. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his two sons, Edward and Richard, his grandson, Lester, and his sister, Rosalie Burnham. He is survived by his daughter, Virginia Buck, his 8 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and great-great children, as well as his brother, Garth Smith, and his special friend Jean Shore. Services will be held at 4 P.M. Tuesday, December 1, 2015 in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. A visitation will precede the service from 3 to 4 P.M. Burial with full military honors will be Wednesday at 11 A.M. in Springfield National Cemetery.
