Georgia Washington York Calton, age 92 of Springfield, MO entered into eternal rest May 15, 2011 in The Manor at Elfindale with family at her side. Georgia was born in Pulaski County on February 22, 1919, the daughter of Wesley and Ida York, the sixth of seven children. She was preceded in death by Dr. Ivan Calton, her loving husband of 69 years, Drew York, Lena Seibert, Cressie Williams, Jesse York, Raymond York, and Donald York. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. Education was the center of her life. She began teaching at the age of 16 at Dublin School, a one room school house. She taught while finishing her degree at what is now Missouri State University. She would later obtain her Master's Degree at New York University, while Ivan was finishing his Doctorate Degree. Upon returning she began a tenure at Greenwood and Springfield Public Schools that would last until her retirement in 1981, a total of 46 years. She was very proud to be elected the 1st female president of the Missouri State Teachers Association in 1971. Her love of flowers and travel was extensive. Georgia leaves a legacy of her loyalty and dedication to all those lives she touched. The family would like to thank The Manor at Elfindale for the wonderful care Georgia received the past two years. Services will be on Thursday, May 19 at 10:00 at Gorman-Scharpf, 1947 East Seminole in Springfield, MO. Interment will be at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in South Springfield.
