Obituary

George Whitcomb of Springfield, MO died at 5:30 PM, Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at Westside Health Care Center in Springfield. Mr. Whitcomb was born December 25, 1933 in Girard, Kansas to Charles T. Whitcomb and Mary Magdaline Dorsey Whitcomb. Survivors include wife Rose Whitcomb, Springfield; two daughters, Saundra Brown, Vandalia, MO, Patricia Blakley, Benton Harbor, Michigan; one step-son, Charles Miller, Greenville, IL; two sisters, Virginia McCallum (Napoleon), Milford, Ohio, Louise Thomas, Wichita Falls, TX; two brothers, William Whitcomb (Meghan), Kansas City, MO, Henry Whitcomb, Omaha, NE. He has 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by father Charles T. Whitcomb and his mother Mary Magdaline Dorsey-Whitcomb and three brothers, James Lloyd Whitcomb, Joe Louis Whitcomb and Charles T. Whitcomb, Jr.; six sisters, Dorothy Estell, Wilma Duncan, Doretta Henderson, Mary-Ann Bedell, Patricia Whitcomb and Josephine Whitcomb. Mr. Whitcomb was educated in the public school system, upon coming of age, he joined the United States Army. He was honorably discharged from the Army in May of 1962. Mr. Whitcomb was employed at Foremost Dairy for many years and retired from General Electric in 1995. He was the author of "Monday Night Skating at Doling Park." His mission was to give recreational outlets to youth in Springfield by providing transportation to skating and paying admission to community events for more than 20 years. He was "Uncle George" to those lives he touched with his giving. Mr. Whitcomb was a professional bowler with the American Bowling Congress, winning an abundance of trophies and monetary awards. He was also a professional heavyweight boxer. Mr. Whitcomb has gone on home to be with the Lord but "he's doing pretty good for a young man."
