Rubenstein
June 20, 1926 – March 18, 2016
George L. Rubenstein passed away peacefully on March 18, 2016 in Glendale Gardens nursing facility after a long illness. George was born in Greenfield, MO on June 20, 1926, the only child of Arthur and Thelma (Weir) Rubenstein. George graduated from Springfield High School, currently Central High School, in 1946. He continued his education at Drury College, currently Drury University, graduating with a degree in Political Science and Business in 1950. While at Drury, he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. After graduation, George joined the family business, Rubenstein's Clothing Company. In June 1952 George married the love of his life, Darlene Ruth Norton. Together they raised three children and worked alongside in the business until its closing in 1985. George and Darlene became active members of Temple Israel in 1952. George served as President of the Congregation and was an instructor in the religious school. George was also active in community organizations. He was a master mason and a 50 plus year member. He was active in the Downtown Kiwanis, joining in 1984 and serving as President from 1998-1999. George was an avid photographer and passed his love of photography on to his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed reading about ancient and modern history.
George was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Darlene and his parents, Arthur and Thelma Rubenstein.
He is survived by his daughters, Rosemary Rubenstein and Julie (Mark) Henderson; and his son, Stephen (Karen) Rubenstein. George is also survived by his grandchildren, Elliot Rubenstein and Emily and Joseph Henderson.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2016 in Temple Israel Cemetery, Springfield, under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Israel or the organization of the donor's choice. The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Glendale Gardens, most especially Cindy Dye, for going above and beyond the call of duty. Thank you.
