December 9, 1919 -March 9, 2011. George was born in Nappanee, Indiana to Elmer and Maude Hershberger. At the age of 3 the family moved to Greentown, Indiana where George graduated from high school with the class of 1939. He graduated from Pittsburg (Pennsylvania) University. Early in World War II George volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps which later became the U.S. Air Force. George retired as Lt. Colonel after serving 22 years of active duty. Following retirement from the Air Force and moving to Springfield, George began his second career as Business Manager for the Women's Clinic. He worked for the Clinic for ten years. George's third career choice was as a vintner in Long Lane, Missouri where he purchased land. He enjoyed several years of growing grapes and making wine which he shared with his many friends. He was a member of King's Way United Methodist Church, Southeast Rotary, the Order of Daedalians, the National Fraternity of Commissioned Military Pilots, the 398th Bomb Group and the Shrine. George had flown thirty missions during World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Constance Scott Hershberger; and two brothers, Russell Hershberger and Virgil Hershberger and his wife Mary. George is survived by his wife Pearl of the home. Survivors also include his sister-in-law Donna Bronaugh in Dallas, his step-children, Deborah and Kurt Anderson and their children Dustin and Katelyn in Woodstock, Georgia, and Timothy Carver and his children Darby and Peyton in Tampa, Florida. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 12, 2011 in King's Way United Methodist Church with the Reverends Jon Spalding and Fred Royer officiating under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Visitation at King's Way at 10 a.m., will precede the memorial service. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Greentown, Indiana.
