Gene Wickliffe, 95, Springfield, passed away at 2:40 a.m. Monday, September 20, 2010 in Mercy Villa. Born in Warsaw, Missouri, on February 18, 1915, the son of Aubrey and Edith Wickliffe. He worked in private business for over 35 years, including Vice-President of John Morris, Sr. companies, before being elected County Treasurer in 1972. In 1975 he was elected Greene County Collector of Revenue and served four terms in that office. He had a passion for sports and served as a "bird dog" scout for the St. Louis Cardinals for more than 22 years. In his spare time he refereed basketball in Southwest Missouri high schools including the Blue and Gold, and Pink and White tournaments and served as high school officials observer for the Missouri State High School Activities Association. He was a member of King's Way United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his brother, Earl K. Wickliffe. Gene is survived by his wife, Marcella Wickliffe, Springfield; daughters, Saundra Nimmo-Garcia, Flower Mound, Texas; and Becky Lang, Springfield; a sister, Betty Hardy; two granddaughters, Missy and Michelle; and three great-grandchildren, Alli, Tannar and Tobey. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 24, 2010 in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel with Chaplain Doug Burwick officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until service time Friday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Southwest Missouri Humane Society or the American Cancer Society. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Love Unit at Mercy Villa for their love, compassion and care given to Gene over the past two years.
