U.S. Army Veteran
Gene Thomas Cantrell, 76, of Springfield, Missouri, was born in Marshfield to the late Chester and Paralee Cantrell. Gene proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, stationed in Okinawa, Japan. After returning home to Southwest Missouri, he began a long and dedicated career with General Electric/Regal-Beloit, where he worked for over 36 years before retiring in Springfield.
It was while working at General Electric that Gene met the love of his life, Darlene, whom he married in July 1984. Together they shared over 41 wonderful years.
Gene had a lifelong passion for sports—especially golf and football—and loved spending time outdoors floating and fishing with friends and family. He will be remembered for his hard work, kindness, and devotion to those he loved.
Gene is survived by his wife, Darlene Cantrell; his sons, Bradley (Kristin) Cantrell of Midland, Texas, and Matthew Cantrell of Springfield, Missouri; his grandchildren, Carter and Charles of Midland, Texas, and Philip, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Samuel, and Sarah of Springfield, Missouri. He is also survived by his sister Kathy (Vic) Cantrell of Conway, Missouri; Mike West of Rogersville, Missouri; and Scott (Evelien) Young of Columbia, Missouri; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Jim Cantrell of Springfield, Missouri and Kenneth Young of Seymour, Missouri; and his sister Rachel Cantrell.
Military Honors will be presented at 10:00 a.m., with visitation immediately following, Friday, October 17th, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield, Missouri.
