Obituary

Gary Richard Miller, 79, passed to his next life on September 27, 2024, fighting a very courageous battle against Pancreatic Cancer. He was a lifelong Springfield, Missouri resident, and graduated from Central High School. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Janita, his Chihuahua Mollie, his son, Brian and his wife Laura Smith, four grandchildren, Tyler, Clayton, Elon and Mitchem, one great-grandson, Kelsen, a brother, Richard Miller, brother in-law, George Mikkelsen, sister in-law, Jean Johnson, numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Warren and Pauline Miller.

Gary loved spending his time working and piddling in his wood shop, creating and building cutting boards and charcuterie boards. He loved spending time at their lake house at Table Rock, often joining folks from the Big Bear community, at "Sunset," on his golfcart and driving the boat for his grandkids. He loved fishing, especially trips to Taneycomo with his wife, son and grandkids. He was always so happy when he got to spend time with those he loved.

Gary enjoyed a great career with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, beginning as a Driver Examiner at Troop D, Springfield. After its creation, Gary transferred and spent the rest of his career within the Motor Vehicle Inspection Division, retiring as the Chief of the division. He had a sincere interest in the School Bus safety inspection program and was instrumental in inspecting thousands of school busses in the Troop D area. Upon retirement with the Patrol, he spent time working with Midwest Accident Reconstruction where his knowledge and expertise was utilized to continue to help others. When he was not working, he spent time visiting with friends and colleagues, a cup of coffee always in hand.

Gary was one who had an ability to get along with everyone. He had an ability to understand, sympathize and empathize with those he came across in his daily life. He knew the importance of treating all people fairly, professionally and with kindness and passed these lessons on to so many. He lived this daily, even to the end, despite his health.

He truly was one of the good guys!

"Let your conscience be your guide."

"Do whatever's customary."
