Gale Shipman Alder, 82, passed away on October 6, 2022 at her home in Springfield, Missouri after a struggle with advancing Alzheimer's disease. Her survivors include Thomas, her husband of 54 years, and several cousins.

Gale was a graduate of Parkview High School, Gettysburg College, and the University of Missouri, where she received her master's degree in Fine Arts and Archaeology.

Moving to Washington, D.C. in 1962, Gale's professional career centered on position in the field of historic preservation, including as architectural historian with the National Trust for Historic Preservation.   Privately, she was also tireless in preserving its original condition the Nova Scotia settler's farmhouse she owned with Tom, an attorney and foundation executive.

In 1992 both Tom and Gale retired to care for their parents. Moving to Springfield in 1998, they continued to care for Gale's mother every day and night for the next 14 years.

It is a joy to recall the breadth of Gale's interests and talents. Like her mother, she was at home in the visual arts, including painting, printmaking, and drawing. She was also a weaver and letterpress printer. Over the years her music ranged from keyboard to lute and mountain dulcimer, and, in her 50's, to Flamenco dancing. And, like her mother, she had a relationship with animals, both wild and family pets, that could border on magical.

Above all, Gale lived her life as a beautiful, intelligent, and deeply caring person. Just before her 1968 wedding a mutual friend remarked to Tom that "she has a gift for happiness". For over the 50 years since, it has been a gift she would share with those who knew and loved her and, who now also know that, in one way or in many, she will always remain an abiding spirit in their lives.

Graveside service will be held Monday, October 17, 2022 at 1:00 PM in Marshfield City Cemetery with The Reverend James Kellett officiating under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.
