Obituary

The Rev. John Winston Biggs, 87, of Springfield, MO, peacefully entered into rest surrounded by his family on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at Magnolia Square Rehabilitation Center.

John was born on December 17, 1937, in Danville, Illinois. As a child, his family moved several times before eventually settling in Kansas City, where he graduated from Paseo High School in 1955. He went on to attend UMKC and later Nashotah House Seminary in Wisconsin. He was ordained to ministry in the Episcopal Church in November of 1962.

On August 18, 1962, John married Marcia Louise Clock. For more than fifty years, they served together, touching the lives of congregations throughout Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and Wisconsin.

In later years, John and Marcia made their home in Springfield, MO, to be near their children and grandchildren. Deeply involved in the community, John found great joy in attending the symphony, researching genealogy, and participating in local community theater productions. Accomplished at needlepoint, he created beautiful works of art, including personalized Christmas stockings for each of his eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marcia, and by his parents, Harold and Alwilda Biggs. He is survived by his children, Anne Breid (Greg), Pat Biggs, and Mary McMillen (Trent); eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his younger sister, Sondra Biggs; and his faithful companion, Jasper the Dog.

The family would like to thank Magnolia Square Rehabilitation Center and Compassus Hospice of Springfield for their kind and compassionate care during John's illness. Special thanks are extended to John's dear friend, Ram Nayar, for his steadfast support and friendship in John's life over these past few years.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 27, from 3:00–5:00 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church. The funeral service will take place on Monday, April 28, at 11:00 a.m., also at St. James Episcopal Church. A private interment will occur at Christ Episcopal Church at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. James Episcopal Church.
