Obituary

Forrest Wayne Bradley, a retired journalist, passed away at 10:33 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011 in St. John's Hospital. He was born March 16, 1924 in Springfield, Missouri, but lived in Buffalo, Missouri, from 1925 until he entered college. He graduated from the public schools in Buffalo in 1942 and from Southwest Missouri State University in 1947, with both a B.S. in Education and a B.A. in Arts. He did graduate study at Northern Colorado University and the University of Missouri. He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years in active and reserve duty, retiring with the rank of Captain in the Corps of Engineers. During World War II, he attended Yale University nine months to study Japanese language under an Army Advanced Specialized Training Program. In 1947 Bradley taught junior college zoology and high school biology at Kemper Military School in Boonville, Missouri . In 1948, he joined the Jarrett Junior High School faculty in Springfield, as a general science teacher for 19 years. He was director of communications at Mid-America Dairymen from 1967 until he retired in 1994. In October 1980, he received the Cooperative Communications Award from the National Cooperative Month Planning Committee, composed of 12 national cooperative associations and government agencies, given annually to one communicator for excellence in publications and communications activities. In 1981, he received the H.E. Klinefelter Award, oldest and highest honor bestowed upon a member of the Cooperative Communicators Association, to recognize contributions in furthering the cooperative system and spirit, and raising the standards of cooperative communications. In 1951, Bradley began free-lance writing for Springfield Newspapers Inc. From 1957 until 1967, he worked full time as a general assignment reporter and feature writer each summer. He developed and wrote a Teen Profile column for Springfield Newspapers on a free-lance basis for 22 years. In August 1982, he began a similar feature for Springfield magazine, titled Two for Tomorrow. Articles in each format profiled noteworthy young people. He featured more than 925 young people in these two formats. He was a member of the Society of Professional Journalists. Bradley was also a member of the Cooperative Communicators Association from 1967 to until 1995, when he was named an honorary member. He served on the CCA board of directors for seven years and was CCA president from 1976-77. From 1985 until 1992, he served as both the national executive secretary and editor of the Cooperative Communicators Association. From 1987 until 1993, he served on the board of directors of the Southwest Missouri Easter Seal Society. He was appointed to the public relations committee of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives in Washington, D.C., in 1976, serving on that committee until 1981. Bradley also served two three-year terms as a trustee of the Springfield Greene County Library Board. He was a member of First and Calvary Presbyterian Church in Springfield. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and their son, John of Springfield; two sisters, Mrs. Lonnie Glor of Buffalo and Helen Bradley of Overland Park, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Bradley, and his mother, Mildred (Bradbury) Bradley. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brentwood Library Fund, 4653 S. Campbell Ave. Springfield, MO 65810. Funeral services are to be held Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel, with the visitation following the service. Burial with full military honors will be held at Hazelwood Cemetery following the service.
