Obituary

Faith Joybelle Berg, 89, of Springfield, went into God's presence January 28, 2010. Joy was born December 13, 1920, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, the youngest of the four daughters of Reuben Sternall, one of the co-founders of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. Since her father pastored a series of pioneer churches in Ontario, she moved quite a few times in her youth. She enrolled at Central Bible Institute and became active in campus life with a focus on music. During her first year there, she became part of a newly formed women's trio named "The King's Daughters," which traveled in several states representing the school. Many over the years remember her for her beautiful and expressive soprano voice. She married Stanley Berg, a young pastor at the time, in London, Ontario, on September 4, 1941. In 1948, she moved with her young family to New York City when Stan became the assistant pastor at one of the leading churches in the Assemblies of God, Glad Tidings Tabernacle. She faithfully served for the next 45 years in a variety of roles in support of her husband in his responsibilities with the local church and the Assemblies of God at both the state and national level. Stan and Joy moved to Springfield, Missouri, in 2000, and were active members at Evangel Temple Christian Center. She lost her love and partner of 66 years in 2007. At the very core of her being was a love for Jesus Christ and a dedication to serve Him in whatever ways she could. She is survived by a sister, Olive of St. Catherines, Ontario; three children, Kenneth of Irving, Texas, Elaine and her husband, Gary Bilton of Lenexa, Kansas, and Robert and his wife, Jane Munson Berg of Springfield, Missouri; four grandchildren, James Bilton and his wife, Michele of Olathe, Kansas, Matthew and his wife, Christine of Bossier City, Louisiana, Angela Marks and her husband, Brian of Edmond, Oklahoma, and David Berg of Springfield, Missouri; and five great-grandchildren, Anna, Max and Brooks Bilton of Olathe, Kansas, and Denver and Anniston Marks of Edmond, Oklahoma. Visitation will be today, Sunday, January 31, from 4 to 6 p.m., and funeral services will be held tomorrow, Monday, February 1, at 12:30 p.m., in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, Springfield, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the R. Stanley Berg Memorial Scholarship for theology students at Evangel University.
