Obituary

Eugene S. Smith, 96, was called home to be with our Lord Wednesday, March 23, 2011 following a prolonged illness. Eugene was born March 9, 1915 in Joplin, Mo. to Philo and May Smith. He served in WWII on the Pacific front as an infantry solider in a special Chaplains unit providing religious support to the men on the front lines. After the war Eugene made his home in Springfield, Missouri but traveled extensively between here and Arizona, rock hounding and documenting his journeys with photography. Eugene's first love however was to God and the church. He was a charter member of First & Calvary Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Hardin class. He was a regular at the men's prayer breakfast and Search Bible Study until his failing health placed him in the loving arms of the many wonderful caregivers at Magnolia Square. Eugene is preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Annie May, and four brothers, Keefer, Howard, Max and Philo Jr. He is survived by a fifth brother, Neil, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at First & Calvary Presbyterian Church from 11am to 11:45am, Saturday, March 26th with the service to follow at 12pm. A short graveside service will follow at Maple Park Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri.
