Elsia Jewell Hicks Spurgeon, 91, died on December 15, 2019. She was born in Douglas County, MO on August 17, 1928 to G. Warren and Maud E. Knight Hicks.
Jewell graduated from the Mountain Grove High School in 1946, where she enjoyed her classes as well as her Drum Corps, Band, Orchestra, Cheerleading and drama class. She was married January 31, 1947 to Elbert "Bert" Flinton Spurgeon in Houston, MO. They lived on their farm north of Mtn. Grove in Texas County for 20 years, then in the city of Mtn. Grove for 20 years. After Elbert's death she moved to Springfield. Jewell was a member of First Freewill Baptist of Mtn. Grove, MO. She was a lifetime member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW) of Mtn. Grove, MO. She was a member of the Missouri Extension Homemakers, where she served in all positions in the local level and several positions on the state level. She served two years as President of Business and Professional Woman on the local level, several years on the Mtn. Grove Hi-Fy-Mo seniors housing board in Mtn. Grove, MO and secretary of Mtn. Grove Cemetery Board.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents; one son, David Dane Spurgeon; five brothers, Clinton Ciral Knight, Nola Norwood Knight, Bruce Oliver Hicks, Barney Ray Hicks and Jesse Howard Hicks; two sisters, Violet Kathleen Knight Williams and Millie Lugene Hicks Dobson and several half brothers and sisters on her Dad's side of the family.
She is survived by two sons; Thomas Eugene Spurgeon (companion Patt Satterfield) of Springfield and James Rodney Spurgeon (Janie Dean Rose) of Savannah, TN; sister, Virgie Evelyn Hicks Jackson (William Sarge) of Sedalia; daughter-in-law, Nancy Jo Jarvis Spurgeon of Casey, IL; grandchildren, Donnie Ray Spurgeon, Timothy Eugene Spurgeon, Colleen Renee Spurgeon, Jennifer Pauline Spurgeon, Sheldon Joe Spurgeon (Amanda Sue Kendell), Dustin Shane Spurgeon (Samantha Jo), Lori Summer Spurgeon Blakey (George Omar) and Brandon James Spurgeon (Abigail Jeanette Iacampo); great grandchildren; Nathanial Hunter Spurgeon, Cameron Xyaver Blakey, Hanna Ordreia Blakey, Isabella Orin Blakey, Gavin Lucian Blakey, Logan Eris Blakey, Ryan Michael Spurgeon, Myah Eve Spurgeon, Abigail Jeanette Spurgeon, Marcus Joel Spurgeon, Isaac Jude Spurgeon, Lucas, Allianna and Violet, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, friends, and the Satterfield family, who loved her as their own.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at the First Freewill Baptist Church in Mountain Grove, MO. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will be at 2:00 PM on Thursday in Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield. Jewell enjoyed her church and her greatest wish would be for you to sponsor the Mtn. Grove Christian Academy School or other Christian Schools, for this is the future of our children.
