Dr. Elpidio "Pete" Alcancia, age 86 of Springfield, MO passed away peacefully at 8:09 am, Sunday, June 7, 2015 holding the hands of his son and daughter, Carl & Grace. He will be remembered as a caring father, loving husband, compassionate physician and a devout member of the Catholic community at Immaculate Conception Parish. Born in Calapan, Mindoro, Philippines, Elpidio was the youngest child of seven. He graduated in 1952 from MAPUA Institute of Technology with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Years later he obtained his medical degree in 1962 from the University of the East in the Philippines. In 1964, he moved to the US to begin his internship in Schenectady, NY and residencies in Flint, Michigan & Columbia, Missouri. He eventually became the director at Lester E. Cox Radiation Center from 1975 - 1981. In 1982, he opened his own clinic, the Radiation Medicine & Cancer Clinic of Springfield. His passion was to promote the true presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist. For many years after the 11:30 am Mass he would lead adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the chapel followed by 3:00 pm Holy Hour. He started regular weekly Mother of Perpetual Help devotions at many area parishes. He designed a pro-life rosary which prays for the unborn in all 50 states and around the world. He enjoyed gardening, landscaping and exercising. Dad liked to attend Mass daily and did so until his decline in health prevented him from going as often. He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Isabelita A. Alcancia, as well as his brother, Marcelino Alcancia and sisters, Laureana Pangilinan, Catalina Manzo, Gloria Ramos, Teodora Pangilinan, Juanita Bacerdo and Norberta Awe. He is survived by his son, Carl Alcancia, daughter-in-law, Katherine Alcancia, daughter, Grace Kappel, son-in-law, Patrick Kappel and grandchildren, Eva Grace Alcancia, Elena Marie Alcancia and Sophia Grace Delap. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Bo. Visitation will be held Sunday, June 14, 2015 at Immaculate Conception Church from 3 to 6:00 pm, with a 5:30 pm rosary prayer service. Visitation again on Monday at 9:00 am, June 15, 2015 at Immaculate Conception Church followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:00 am with Fr. Tom Kiefer celebrant and Deacon Kevin Tulipana assisting. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery followed by lunch at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri, 424 E.
