Ellen Edwards, 89, of Springfield, died on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Magnolia Square. Ellen was born on August 12, 1922 to George and Irma Edwards, the eldest of three daughters. She was an organist, first at St. John's Episcopal Church, then later at Christ Episcopal Church. She also played for Springfield Little Theater, MSU Tent Theater and Springfield Regional Opera. She also volunteered at St. John's Hospital. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Mildred McCarthy. She is survived by her sister, Katie Walstrand and six nieces and nephews: Paula Phillips, Margaret Smith, Susan Richardson, Sarah Zinn, John Walstrand and Eric Walstrand and their spouses. She is also survived by thirteen great-nieces and nephews and six great-great nieces and nephews. Requiem memorial mass will be at Christ Episcopal Church on Monday, July 23, 2012 at 11 a.m. No visitation is planned. Cremation is under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, with inurnment at Maple Park Cemetery. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John's Hospice.
