Obituary

Elizabeth "Liz" Sweet (Hoover), 83 passed away on March 18, 2021. She was born to the late C.B. "Bud" and Selena Hoover, September 17, 1937 in Atchison, KS. Liz graduated from Springfield High School (Central) in 1955 and received a bachelor's degree in education from Southwest Missouri State University in 1958.  She was married to the late Dorl R. Sweet in August of 1958.  She is survived by her sister, Rebecca Anwar of Philadelphia, PA., 3 children, 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and a loving host of extended family and friends.

When Liz first met Dorl, she was aware that a friend bet Dorl he couldn't get a date with her. Her yes to a date to spite his friend obviously ended well as they shared 49 years of marriage until Dorl's passing.

Liz was a teacher in the Springfield Public Schools from 1958 to 1966 when she began her new career as a full time mother to three children Janie Schumacher, Jeffrey Sweet and John Sweet.  Her new career included, but was not limited to: taxi driver, barber, nurse, scout leader, campfire leader, chef, accountant, social coordinator and party planner.   Liz made a few guest appearances on a friend's local PBS television show and volunteered her time working for the annual auction for PBS.  Her love of teaching children and God came together when she became the Children's Christian Education Director at what was First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, PCUSA in 1981. She faithfully served in that role until her retirement in 2004.

Liz was a true believer in the wisdom children brought to worship and viewed her work, rightly so, as a calling to help "equip" young people in their ministry.  Liz was well versed in calling others to be with children in a variety of ways.  Liz encouraged others to share their gifts and talents, not just be a warm body to fill a position.  Her leadership with others grew the area of Children's ministry and brought creative ways to understand God, faith, love, service and fun.  Liz continued as a volunteer for the church and in 2015, with other dedicated followers, began the journey of chartering a new PCUSA church that reflected a welcoming and mission oriented body of Christ.  She was a proud member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and loved her extended church family.

Liz had many other great loves, including all things involved in organizing: office supplies, color-coding, bins, containers and folders.  But to really know Liz is to know Comic Sans. All rules for font style went out the window when she discovered her favorite font. Her letters, binders, labels, and even headstone, quickly edged out Times New Roman.

She loved her friends and loved the time she was able to spend with them. She was outstanding making others welcomed into groups and creating opportunities for friends to get together.  She was a long time member and coordinator of a Christmas cookie swap that spanned decades and the newsletter editor for her Friday lunch bunch so appropriately named, "The Happiness Girls".   A book could be published for all the things she did that brought happiness and joy to those that met her.  And I am sure she would designate someone to do it for her.

She will be missed, but remembered by many, even those that honked at her in the car.  She turned, waved and said, "Hello new friend!" Liz seemed to always have a way of leaving a lasting impression.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to Crosslines -The Council of Churches of the Ozarks in her memory.

Graveside service will be held Thursday, April 8, 2021 at 10:00 AM in Maple Park Cemetery.
