Albert Earl Niewald, 86, of Springfield, passed away on January 25, 2020. He was born July 17, 1933 to Rev. Walter and Flora Niewald. The youngest of five children, he moved to New Haven, MO at the age of nine, where his father was pastor of a rural Lutheran Church. He attended one-room schools and graduated from New Haven High School. He joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After his discharge, he attended the University of Missouri and received a degree in Forestry. While attending college, he met Nancy Bowers from Canton, OH. They were married in 1959 and raised three sons.

He worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 30 years in several National Forests in five different states. After retirement, he did tax preparation for an additional 30 years. Upon retirement in New Hampshire, he moved to Springfield, MO.

Volunteer activities included the Springfield Nature Center and being a volunteer tax preparer. He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church and was a current member of Messiah Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary, parents; brothers, Don and Leonard and sister, Laura Elgert.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; sons Doug, Andrew (Michelle) and Thomas (Marion); grandchildren Phillip, Katie and Jeremy; sister Carolyn Scheer and 16 nieces and nephews.

Graveside Services with Full Military Honors will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 14, 2020 at Missouri Veterans Cemetery. Memorial Services will follow at 11:00 AM at Messiah Lutheran Church, with a visitation following the service at the church. Services are under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Messiah Lutheran Church Endowment Fund or the Springfield Council of Churches.
