Obituary

Dorothy Womac Stoner, 85, died in Cox South Hospital on December 17. At the time of her death she was a resident of Riverside Residential Place in Ozark, where a loving staff blessed her life for two years. Dorothy was born September 12, 1924 in Niota, Tenn., the daughter of M. Ray and Theora Sewell Womac. She was raised in eastern Tennessee, graduating from Central High School in Chattanooga in 1942. That same year, while working as a soda jerk in her father's drug store, she caught the eye of H.E. "Gene" Stoner, a dashing civil engineer who was new in town. Dot and Gene married October 1, 1942, and moved to Camp Chemical in Freeport, Texas, for Gene's next assignment. 1943 brought a move to jobs in Oak Ridge, Tenn., the "Secret City" where the world's first atomic bomb was manufactured. Subsequent engineering jobs took them from Ironton, Mo., the home of Gene's parents to Albany, N,Y,; Miamisburg, Ohio; Richmond, Va.; Charleston, S.C.; and back to Chattanooga, before finally settling in Springfield, Mo. - the city they chose to settle down and raise their growing family. Dot and Gene purchased Missouri Products Drug Company which they operated until after Gene's death on August 9, 1966. A member of Schweitzer United Methodist Church and an award-winning quilter for many years, Dorothy was a founding member of Schweitzer's quilting group. She was an inveterate card player and, even at 85, could still beat the aces in the family Dot was a loving wife and mother with a core of strength that allowed her to walk through adversity without losing her belief in the future. A good friend, an outstanding aunt and sister-in-law - so outstanding, in fact, that she was "adopted" by the inlaws - Dot mixed mischief with caring to touch and delight all who knew her. Tales of her mischievous nature provide moments of warmth and laughter among her loved ones. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one sister, Fannie Rae Wheeler. She is survived by her children, Linda Stoner, Shawnee, Kan., Judy Gann, Anita Davis, Bob Stoner and his wife Jean, and Patti Stoner, all of Springfield; grandchildren, Heather and husband Mike Green, Nixa, Jennifer and husband Scott Jones, Lafayette, Ind., Bryon Stoner, Rogersville, Chesney Allen, Shawnee, Kan., and Candace Stoner, Turners; and great grandchildren, Alyssa, Victoria, and Mikenna Green, Nixa, and Christopher Jones, Lafayette, Ind.; sister, Evelyn Green, Mooresburg, Tenn.; and brother, Theo and his wife Bobbi, Chattanooga, Tenn.; brother-in-law, Allen Wheeler, Chattanooga, Tenn.; and numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, December 21 in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, 1947 East Seminole. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 22 in Schweitzer United Methodist Church, 2747 E. Sunshine. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks in care of the funeral home.
