Obituary

Springfield – Dorothy Mae Jordan passed away on July 27, 2020. Dorothy was born on November 30, 1931, in Boise, Idaho, to the late Roy Herbert and Mary Louella (Davis) Fike. She married Joseph W. Jordan on May 31, 1958, and together they raised three children.

Dorothy grew up with her parents and six siblings on the family farm near Competition, Missouri. She loved the outdoors and animals, trained her cat and even had a possum for a pet.

She graduated from Competition High School in 1949 and attended Missouri State University. In 1955, she started her career as a beautician and owner of "Ure Beauty Shop," a popular Springfield salon. After selling her salon to raise her children, she continued to cut hair for several who were home-bound or elderly. She was a tireless volunteer for many Springfield organizations, including: Hospice, Crosslines, Meals on Wheels, Greenwood PTA, and the Springfield Symphony and Little Theater Guild, where she received awards for her work. She was also active in National Avenue Christian Church and their Garden Club.

Dorothy and Joe started attending Missouri State Bear's basketball and football games together in 1958, and rarely missed a game. She loved the St. Louis Cardinals, and traveling to games in St. Louis. They also traveled together all over Europe, the US and Canada. Dorothy loved to decorate her home, entertain and play bridge. She always kept a positive attitude and never complained. She loved movies, her favorites were Monty Python's Holy Grail and The Sound of Music.

She loved all living things. An avid gardener, she enjoyed giving plants she cultivated as gifts. She loved watching and feeding wild birds, naming several that lived in her yard. She rescued and fostered numerous cats and a couple of lost dogs, always finding them loving homes.

She adored her grandchildren and instilled in them her love of the outdoors and backyard adventures - and ice cream sandwiches.

Besides her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her brother, Tom Fike, her sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Walter Dial, her brother-in-law, Ralph Dowden, and her sister, June Fike.

She is survived by husband Joe, her son Charles "Chris" (Cleo) Jordan of Windsor, Vermont; and daughters Joann (Craig) Hosmer of Springfield, Missouri; and Cindy (Ric) Weinstein of Chesterfield, Missouri; her five grandchildren: Mitchell, William, Megan, James "Harry," and Theo. Also left to remember Dorothy is her brother, Ken Fike (Lillian) of Lebanon, Missouri; sisters Myrlene Dowden of Mountain Grove, Missouri; Glenda (Joe) Underwood of Lexington, Illinois; her sister-in-law Charity Fike of Shoshini, Wyoming; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends who will miss her humor, creativity, wisdom, caring and love.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice, volunteer, adopt a cat (but don't have too many), or plant the perfect shrubbery.

Private family services were held at Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield, Missouri.
