Obituary

Doris Marlyene Everheart died peacefully in Lawrence, KS on January 29, 2013. Doris was the widow of Dr. William E. Everheart former Senior Minister of First and Calvary Presbyterian Church (1962-1971) and President of Drury University (1971-1976). She was a 6th generation Texan who was born in the deep East Texas town of Joaquin. Doris was the salutatorian of Joaquin High School where she graduated in 1937 and excelled in basketball, tennis and debate. In 1940, she graduated from Texas Women's University and returned to Joaquin to teach high school English at age 19. In Joaquin, one of her students introduced her to the love of her life Bill Everheart, a young preacher who was conducting a nearby revival. Bill and Doris were married in Kerens, TX in June, 1941. Afterwards, they served Presbyterian Churches in New Orleans, LA, Athens, TX, Amarillo, TX and Springfield, MO. Together they loved to trout and bass fish, travel and spend time with children and grandchildren. After Bill's death in 1976, Doris, a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, was active in Presbyterian church governance both at a local and a national level. She continued to travel and her many trips took her all over the world. Doris stayed every summer at her beloved mountain cabin in Cuchara, CO reading, fishing, hiking, tending to her flower beds and spending wonderful days with her children and their families. She was actively involved in the Cuchara community and had many close friends. Above all, Doris loved to play tennis beginning in high school and continuing throughout her life both in Springfield and Cuchara. When she was finally forced to lay her racket down, her trophy case was full and her exploits were legend. Doris is survived by her four children, William E. Everheart, II and wife Barbara of Dallas, TX, Jo Ann Everheart of Arlington, TX, Sarah Sandra Eisen and husband Rick of Bosque Farms, NM and Susan Marlyene Guenther and husband Harold of Lawrence, KS; by grandchildren, Tracy Everheart and wife Julia of Atlanta, GA, Terry Everheart and wife Hope of McKinney, TX, Kimberly Rivera and husband Randy of Littleton, CO, Kristi Carlisle and husband Clay of Arlington, TX, Julie Crum and husband Jeff of Bosque Farms, NM, Leigh Ann Siebert and husband Ty of Lawrence, KS, Dean Alt and wife Pam of Lawrence, KS and Billy Alt and wife Suzy of Lawrence, KS; and by great grandchildren Elle and Hunter Everheart, Payton and Hailey Everheart, Katie and Tanner Rivera, Allison and Andrew Carlisle, Caleb and Kyle Crum, Colton and Calli Siebert and Emily and Hailey Alt.
