Obituary

Donald Edward Strub, 82 of Springfield, MO, died at his home peacefully from leukemia on Saturday, August 4, 2012. Don was born April 25, 1930 in Iowa City, Iowa, the middle son of Frank Joseph and Beatrice Anna (Benda) Strub. He was a graduate of Iowa City High School and attended the University of Iowa. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War, graduating from the War College Naval School of Justice. On June 10, 1956 he married June Ann (Jae) Jackson in Charles City, Iowa. Don was an Accountant for the Amana Refrigeration Company prior to entering private business in 1958. He was Vice President and Co-Owner of Component Homes Inc. of Iowa City for 28 years. Don and his wife moved to Springfield, Missouri in 1986, where he was Controller and Treasurer of Acro Trailer Inc. until retiring in the year 2000. Don was an active volunteer and served on numerous Committees and Boards, including: President of the Home Builders Association of Iowa, National representative of the HBA, Member of the National Association of Home Manufacturers, Treasurer of the Midwest Home Manufacturers Association for over twenty years, President of the Greater Iowa City Chamber of Commerce, Board Member of Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City, and Member of the National Association of Accountants and the Iowa Chapter of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Don was extremely proud of his lifelong association with Optimist International. During his membership of 52 years, he served as Club President, Lt. Governor, Governor, International Vice President, and International President. He was a past member of the Optimist Club of Coralville, Iowa and the Sunrise Optimist Club of Iowa City, Iowa. At the time of his death he was a member of the Breakfast Optimist Club of Springfield, Missouri. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, reading, hunting and fishing. Don was a private pilot, a member of Ducks Unlimited, the Springfield Friends of the Library and Wesley United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife Jae of 56 years, and his three children: Carrie and her husband, Michael Harned, of Springfield, MO; Kathy and her husband, Jerry Carter, of Springfield, MO; and Douglas Strub and his wife, Renee, of Indianola, IA; five grandsons: Paul and Scott Harned, Brant Carter, and Tyler and his wife Tallis Strub and Casey Strub; two brothers: Robert Strub and his wife, Margee, of Ocala, FL; and Frank Strub and his wife, Patricia, of Spokane, WA. Don lived a life filled with integrity, optimism, and a spirit of perseverance. He was very appreciative of the caring professionalism by the staff of Oncology, Hematology Associates, Wheeler Infusion Center, and Hospice Compassus. Memorial services will be held on Friday, August 10 at 11:00 a.m. in the Wesley United Methodist Church, 922 W. Republic Road, Springfield, MO 65807 followed by a reception luncheon in the church. A private family burial will follow in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield, MO. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Optimist International Foundation 4494 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63108 or Wesley United Methodist Church, or in care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, 1947 East Seminole, Springfield, MO 65804.
