Obituary

Donald Stewart Peebles, P.E., 63, of Springfield, Missouri, died at 10:25 a.m. August 8, 2011 at St. John's Hospital three months after being diagnosed with gastric cancer. A 1970 graduate of the University of Missouri-Rolla, Don was the son of Diane Peebles, of Springfield, who survives him, and the late Claude Peebles, also a P.E. Don was born in Lawrence , KS. His first wife, Kathy, the mother of his three children, predeceased him in 2001. He is also survived by his wife, Cheryl Capages Peebles; a son, Jeffrey Peebles and his wife Kelli, and their children Alex, Maci and Sophi, all of Fort Worth, Texas; daughter Courtney Peebles, of Springfield; daughter Lindsay Harper, her husband Major J.T. Harper, and their children, Henry and Kate, of Fairfax, VA; sister, Marion Peebles of Springfield, MO; brother Mark Peebles and his wife Sue, of Aliso Viejo, CA.; nephew Casey and his wife Kristin, and niece Ashley Hunter and her husband, Daren, all of Atlanta, GA; sister Claudia Peebles and her husband Dave Graybeal, of Mount Prospect, IL; niece Alyssa Graybeal, of Kansas City and nephew, Chuck Graybeal and his wife Alison, of Memphis, TN.; an aunt Colette Stewart, of Independence, KS, step-children Robin Stange, her husband Ben and their son, Jackson; step-son Joshua Gaither, his wife Kate, and their son, Sterlng; sister-in-law Candace Welch, of Creve Coeur, MO and her children and grandchildren, sister-in-law Karissa McCarter and her husband, David, of Fordland, and Martin and Pamela Capages of Springfield; and many cousins and friends. Don was a longtime member of the KA Fraternity from his Rolla years and enjoyed the yearly get-togethers with his brothers and their families who have been meeting for 41 years. At the time of his death, he was employed by CH2MHill, an international engineering company. He was based in Corpus Christi, TX, but owned a small farm outside of Springfield where he lived part-time as a break from the warm climate of the Gulf Coast, which he also loved. For CH2MHill he served as operations leader, project manager and client services development specialist. Previously, he worked for Goldston Engineering in Corpus Christi after closing Peebles and Associates, of Bedford, TX, an engineering and surveying company he operated for many years. He enjoyed his years with CH2MHill because he was able to mentor many young engineers in training to become full-fledged professional engineers. He will particularly be missed by Laura, Javi, Sarah, Dan and Brian whom he has cheered and prodded on to succeed. Don took particular pride in their achievements and worked hard to build them as a team. The group took part in blood drives, beach clean-ups at the National Seashore on Padre Island, and the Flamingo project at the Botanical Gardens. He was also, they remember, the king of tuneless whistling. He is also remembered by special friends, Dave and Elsa, Tom and Marie, Mark and Elizabeth and Katherine and David, and Chris Dorang. Visitation will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home at 1947 E. Seminole. A memorial service will be a 4 p.m. Wednesday in Community Christian Church, 4806 East Cherry Street (E. Farm Road 136, Springfield.) In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contribution be made to Community Christian Church for their on-going work for those in need. Don believed very much in the church's motto, "Thou Shalt Not Stand Idly By." Or, contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
