Donald Glenn Bechtel passed away on December 23, 2014 at Mercy Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Dallas Center, Iowa on January 19, 1927 to Walter and Alma (Greif) Bechtel. They and his sister Lucille and brother Russell preceded him in death. Don served with the 2nd Armored Division during his service in World War II. He attended Drake University upon returning from service, became affiliated with Sinclair Oil Company for 50 years, first as a salary employee in management for 25 years, then as a co-owner of Ozarks Petroleum, Ozarks General Stores and Beca Total Mart Stores for an additional 25 years. After his retirement he became a volunteer worker and served on the State of Missouri Advisory Board for the Petroleum Tank Insurance Fund. He also was a volunteer for the Convention and Visitor Bureau of Springfield. He was a very active member of Messiah Lutheran Church where he served in many areas, especially in Stewardship and Finance and was a Co-Founder of the Messiah Mission Endowment Fund. Don loved singing and greatly enjoyed being a member of the church choir. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Mead on May 10, 1947 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Grimes, Iowa. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; his three sons, Lon Bechtel of Great Falls, MT, Lawrence Bechtel and wife Margaret of Springfield, MO, Les Bechtel and wife, Tammy of Ozark, MO; and one daughter, Jean Hudson and husband, Jim of Wildwood, MO. Don had six grandchildren: Chad Bechtel of Springfield, MO, Alex Bechtel of St. Marys, GA; Bridget Bechtel of New York, Gretchen Bechtel of Arkansas, Haley Hudson of Wildwood, MO and Lance Hudson of Wildwood, MO; and one great-grandson, Brantley Bechtel of St. Marys, GA. Visitation will be from 3 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 28, 2014 at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, 1947 E. Seminole in Springfield. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 29, 2014 at Messiah Lutheran Church, 925 E. Seminole in Springfield.
