Obituary

Blessed rest arrived on August 11, 2012 for David Alexander Martin of Springfield, MO. Born April 18, 1925 in West Helena, AR, David was 17 when the family settled in Springfield, MO. He graduated from Central High School in 1943 and attended Drury University before enlisting in the US Marine Corps in May 1944 at the age of 19. Trained in anti-tank warfare, Private Martin's unit (4th Marine Division) fought at Iwo Jima and on March 1st, 1945 Dave was wounded in combat. The Purple Heart medal was awarded to Dave as a result of enemy action. He was always grateful to the VA for the care he received over the past 67 years. David and family joined the First Christian Church of Sedalia, Missouri in 1958 where he served as Sunday school teacher for 32 consecutive years. Elder Emeritus was bestowed to him in 2002. Marshfield United Methodist Church became his church family in 2006 where he remained a member after his move to Springfield, MO in 2010. Giving back to the communities through Rotary International was one of David's greatest personal accomplishments. As a Paul Harris Fellow, he belonged to this service club for over 50 years. David's family was at the center of his heart until the end of this life. Survivors include Fay, his wife of nearly 60 years, son Clay Campbell and wife Gretchen, daughter Laura Martin, brother John Howell, niece Cindy Howell, granddaughters Clarissa Brittain and husband Chuck, Kathy Nicodemus and husband Sean, grandson David A. (DAC) Campbell and wife Erica, daughter-in-law Linda Hughes Campbell, great grandchildren Corey Irwin and wife Shelby, Drew Irwin, Allison Brittain, Deidre Bradshaw and husband Ben, Michael Austin Brittain, Samantha Nicodemus, Spencer Nicodemus, Oliver Martin Campbell, and great great granddaughter Brighton Irwin. Visitation will be on Friday, August 17, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Missouri Veterans Cemetery. The family would like to express their gratitude to the loving hands of the aides and nurses of Magnolia Square, Springfield, MO. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Rotary International will continue David's commitment to this club's work.
