IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Darlene Joyce
Wilson
February 16, 1934 – June 20, 2025
Darlene Joyce Hedgpeth-Wilson was born on February 16, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan, to Blon and Irene. She later moved to Springfield, where she graduated from Central High School in 1951. Darlene continued her education at Southwest Missouri State College, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education on August 2, 1955, and obtaining her Permanent Elementary Certificate to teach in Missouri for life.
Her adventurous and witty spirit led her to sunny San Diego, where she traveled with her good friend in her car named George. Darlene attended the University of California, San Diego State, and earned her California Teaching License. From 1955 to 1970, she dedicated herself to fostering young minds as an elementary school teacher in San Diego, spending many years teaching kindergarten.
On July 26, 1969, Darlene married Robert Allen Wilson in Springfield at St. Paul Methodist Church. Bob, a US Navy Lieutenant Commander, retired in 1973, and they returned to Springfield, where Darlene continued her teaching career in Springfield Public Schools.
Darlene was deeply involved in her community. She was an active sister of Sigma Kappa Sorority and a member of the Golden Circle of Sigma Kappa with over 50 years of membership. Her commitment extended to the Presbyterian Church, the National Education Association, and the Red Cross. Darlene's love for bowling led her to participate in several leagues, earning the title of Most Improved Bowler in the Women's International Bowling League.
Known for her wit, intelligence, and personable nature, Darlene was incredibly intuitive and wise, offering kind advice when needed. Her talent for poetry was evident in the hundreds of poems she wrote. An avid cook and stupendous hostess, Darlene delighted friends and family with new cuisines, meticulously documenting her favorite recipes with color-coded stars and personal notes of whom she shared the meal with.
Her exquisite decorating style showcased her love of animals, especially cats and pink flamingos, and her favorite color, pink. Darlene had an eye for detail, ensuring that even lamps, doilies, and table scarves were color-coordinated. Bob often remarked that if there was an empty space anywhere, Darlene would decorate it. Her eye for style extended to her fashion choices, where she was always adorned with the latest trends, complete with matching glasses, earrings, shoes, and pocketbooks.
She cherished playing bridge with the girls and spending Friday nights at the Elks Club, but above all, she treasured the time and memories spent with her family.
Darlene is survived by her brother, Dwight Hedgpeth, and his wife Pat, and her sister, Diana Cave. Darlene is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Stephanie Gehrig, Greg Swift, Jeff Hedgpeth and Jennifer Montaleone.
