Jesus wept. The shortest verse in the Bible, but powerful medicine for the brokenhearted. The death of His friend, Lazarus, overwhelmed Jesus—even though He knew He was about to raise His friend from the dead. Such empathy from our Loving God and the beautiful example of victory over death allow us to go on living when we lose a dear loved one, like Danny Applegate, who passed away Friday night.
Danny’s immediate family received the gift of a full month to reminisce, to love, and to leave nothing unsaid. It wasn’t nearly enough, but it was still a bittersweet gift. And Danny died just like he lived: putting others ahead of himself and showing love in every way he could.
Danny nearly died shortly after his birth in 1941, along with his mother, Sadie, who passed away. His survival after being so premature was attributed to a miracle. Danny was essentially an only child, being born late in his Father’s life. He grew up in Yakama, Washington on a commercial chicken farm until moving to Chadwick, Missouri, at age seven.
Danny was the son of a rugged pioneer, Sig Applegate; the grandson of an impactful pastor, Joe Marian Applegate, and the great-grandson of a Baldknobber, Gilbert Applegate. Likewise, Danny lived an impactful life, trusting Jesus as his savior at a young age. Danny was so important to many, many people as loving husband, dad, and grandfather; faithful friend; hard worker; empathetic encourager; great listener; and constant source of good information—from the weather, to world events, life hacks, sports trivia (especially the Cardinals), and little-known-facts.
Danny was father to three children, Pam, Steve, and Mark. His family legacy carries on through 16 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. He married his dream girl, Fay, in 1991, and they’ve been living a charmed life through their golden years. He became a cherished friend and mentor to his stepchildren Julie, Michael Jay, Barry, and Jennie.
God is near to the brokenhearted, and we will get through this season of grief. We will not lose hope. We will one day rise from the dead and see The Lord face to face, and Danny will be there with our other loved ones who went on ahead, being his lovable self—but now perfected and glorious. What a day that will be!
The life celebration is set for Thursday, June 11th at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield, with visitation at 1pm followed by the memorial service at 2pm. Wear your favorite Cardinals jersey or other red clothing—no black mourning attire please 😊❤️
