Obituary

Dr. Charles Edward "Chuck" Stufflebeam, 76, passed away peacefully at home in the care and comfort of his family, on Sunday March 1, 2009. He had fought a long 20 year battle with Parkinson's disease. His faith and devotion to Christ, and to his family set a superb example to us all and has left our small part of the world a better place. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri on February 22, 1933 to Finley and Lucille Stufflebeam. Chuck married Patricia Stipp on August 3, 1952. Together they devoted their lives to their three sons and extended family. Chuck received his PhD, MS, and BS degrees from the University of Missouri. He also attended Southwest Baptist College. He and Pat, both graduated from Midway High School, near Neosho Missouri, in 1951. Chuck entered the US Army at the end of the Korean Conflict and served in the US Army Reserves for 26 years. He was with the 14th Preventive Medicine Detachment in Springfield and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1989. He was a devoted teacher. As a Professor of Animal Science for 27 years in the Department of Agriculture at Missouri State University, Dr. Stufflebeam received several awards for his outstanding teaching while at SMSU. He authored three books, Genetics of Domestic Animals, Principles of Animal Agriculture, and An Instructor's Manual for Principles of Animal Agriculture. He began his teaching career at Sul Ros State University in west Texas and moved on to Northwestern State University at Nachitoches, Louisiana. The family spent five wonderful years there making many friends and lasting memories. He was a self-made expert in many fields: entomology, geology, poetry, mechanics, country music, and others. He could fix anything. He designed and built his own house from the ground up on 60 acres north of Republic where they lived for 35 years. During his time at SMSU, Chuck served as Secretary, Vice Chairman, and Chairman of the Faculty Senate, Historian and President of the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA), Secretary-Treasurer and President of the Missouri Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture. Chuck was an active member of First Baptist Church in Springfield since 1969 where he was a Deacon and Sunday School director and teacher. He served as President on the Republic School Board in the late 70's and was a long time member and past President of the Southeast Lions Club in Springfield, and was an integral part of the Lions Club Horse Show for many years.
