Charles Emile Smith, age 60, died in Sedalia Mo. June 25, 2024. He was born in St. John's Hospital, Springfield, Mo. Dec. 12, 1963.
He was the son of Donald E Smith Sr. (deceased) and Maureen Babin Smith, father of Josef Alexander Smith (Alex), brother of Kenneth B Smith (deceased), Donald E Smith Jr, Mary S Dunham, and Theodore B. Smith. He had 4 nieces and 5 nephews.
He graduated from Kickapoo H.S. and attended VoTec, Ozark Community College, and Drury College. He attended many specialized schools eventually working in sterilization at St. Johns/Mercy Hospital.
Charlie had a natural mechanical aptitude and a sensitive disposition and was very physically active. He played softball and volleyball and was on the high school swim team. He had many outings at the lake and often walked 5 miles or more. He was an Eagle Scout and taught aquatics at a nearby Boy Scout camp.
Charlie had many jobs starting at age 12. (Delivering Penny Power) He worked for St John's Hospital for 23 years. He started in the kitchen "dish room" and after a few years moved to the maintenance department where he did many different jobs, ending with Information technology.
Charlie had many ups and downs in life. He went through an early divorce which limited his time with his young son. In 2016, he was diagnosed with Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) which led to his death on June 25, 2024. Despite the challenges he encountered in life, he was happy, worked hard, and had many friends. He loved his family.
Memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday. July 8, 2024 in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Private burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery.
