Obituary

Charles William Glass passed away quietly on January 1, 2020, at Glendale Gardens Nursing and Rehab in Springfield, MO. He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Opal, also of Springfield, a son, Michael (Susie) Glass of Columbia, MO, and two daughters, Jeannine (Ronald) Watson of Springfield, MO and Bettie (Ernest) Hall of Cincinnati, OH. Also surviving are grandchildren Donald (Barbara) Hall, Charles (Melinda) Hall, Rhonda (Kelly) White, Angelia Porter, Lance (Wendy) Watson, Shane (Lisa) Glass, Jeannine (Glenn) Gailey, and Michael (Loree) Hall, a host of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He will also be deeply missed by many loving friends and caregivers.

Charles was born in Wyaconda, MO, May 6, 1920 and grew up learning farming and carpentry from his father. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and met and married his wife while stationed in Pensacola, FL. During the War, he was sent to Pearl Harbor and rose in rank to Petty Officer First Class. He was honorably discharged in 1944 and enjoyed farming until the 1960's. He then worked for the city of Columbia, MO, where he returned to school to earn his G.E.D. After retiring, they moved to Springfield, where they were faithful members of the Southside Senior Center. He was a competitive pool player and brought home numerous trophies. He enjoyed excellent health for nearly all of his life, suffering only a few hospitalizations. He was a member in good standing of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and had recently been inducted into the Sons of the American Revolution.

In addition to his parents, Clarence and Ora Glass, Charles was preceded in death by his siblings, Beulah Rockhold, Clarence Glass, Rose McClure, Florence Tipps, Robert Glass, and Wilbur Glass, grandson Mason Sheldon, son-in-law Larry Sheldon, and daughter Charlotte Sheldon.

Visitation will be at the Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield on Tuesday, January 7, at 11 a.m., with an open casket service at noon. Burial with military honors will follow at 2 p.m. at the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery in Springfield.

The family extends their gratitude to Haven Home Health and Hospice, and to Glendale Gardens Nursing and Rehab, both of Springfield, for their care. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to your local senior center or senior care facility.
