Obituary

Carl N. Mentgen, M.D., 76, Springfield, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2015. He was born in 1939 in Marysville, Kansas, the son of John and Marguerite Mentgen. Carl graduated from Marysville High School in 1957. He went on to complete a degree in Liberal Arts from Kansas State University in 1961, his M.D. from the University of Kansas in 1965, and residency as an Internist and Gastroenterologist 1968-1971. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed at the Federal Medical Center in Springfield, MO. Dr. Mentgen began his fulltime career in medicine at Ferrell Duncan Clinic in Springfield, MO in 1971 and practiced for more than 30 years before retiring in 2006 and continuing part-time with consultative services for the State of Missouri Department of Health. Dr. Mentgen was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and farming. He spent much of his time working outdoors on the farm, at the lake and with his family and friends. He loved his family and enjoyed attending outings and other family events whenever possible. Those who knew Carl will always remember his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. Dr. Mentgen was an accomplished physician and was very active in the medical community and his home church of Immaculate Conception through the years. The following are some of his accomplishments: President, Phi Kappa Theta, Kansas State University; Newman Civic Fellow Award Recipient; Chief Resident, University Kansas Medical Center; President, Greene County Medical Society; Chief of Staff, Cox Medical Centers and Knights of Columbus. Carl Mentgen is survived by his loving wife, Karen Mentgen; daughter, Julie Mentgen (Springfield, MO); son John and his wife Laura, and grandson John Austin (Nebraska). He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Elden Martin and extended family (Ohio, Texas, Indiana), and his sister-in-law, A.J. Kern (Springfield, MO). Services for Dr. Mentgen are as follows: A Rosary will be said at 5:30 PM on Friday September 25, 2015 with visitation to follow from 6-8 PM at Gorman- Scharpf Funeral home. Memorial services will be Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 11 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a no kill animal shelter, C.A.R.E (Castaway Animal Rescue Effort), 1328A W. Sunshine Street, Springfield, MO 65807; (417) 875-6565. Dr. Mentgen loved dogs and rescued several.
