October 17, 1936 – January 13, 2024
Carl Ray Maggard, 87, of Springfield, Mo, passed away on January 13, 2024, at Mercy Hospital surrounded by his family.
He was born on October 17, 1936, in Keltner, MO to Lincoln and Gracie Fay (Butler) Maggard.
Carl graduated from Willard High School and served in the United States Army as a Field Artillery Crewman on the MGR-1A "Honest John" rocket system in Germany from 1959 to 1961.
On October 15, 1966, Carl married Mildred Joyce Brower. They had two children, Carla and David.
Carl retired from the Federal Bureau of Prisons having served as a prison guard in Leavenworth, Kansas and at the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, MO. Following his retirement from the federal government, Carl continued to work for as long as he was able and held several jobs including fishing rod repairman at Bass Pro, security at One Parkway Place, bus aid for Springfield Public Schools and security at Alpha House.
Carl enjoyed fishing, wood carving, collecting fishing lures and coins, but what he enjoyed most in this world was his grandchildren and spending time with them.
He is survived by his wife Joyce, daughter Carla J. Cones and husband Duane, son David R. Maggard and wife Christina. Grandchildren Thomas Maggard, Hailey Cones and Jacob Cones. Also, his brother Bill Maggard and wife Barbara along with several nieces and nephews.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jack L. Maggard and his grandson Matthew Carl Maggard.
A visitation is scheduled for Thursday, January 18, 2024, from 6-8pm at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield, MO. A committal service and interment will take place at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield, MO on Friday, January 19, 2024 at 1pm.
