Obituary

Carl Edward Deck, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Sunday, September 17, 2017 the the age of 81, following health complications at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO.  Ed was born May 6, 1936 to Trucille (Blumer) and Carl R. Deck in Okmulgee, OK.  His parents and younger brother, Harold, moved to Buffalo, MO at an early age.

At Buffalo High School, Ed excelled in music, basketball and particularly baseball.  Forgoing college scholarship opportunities, he was drafted out of high school by the St. Louis Cardinals and played briefly in their farm system.  Ed married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ellen Stanton in Buffalo, MO on December 19, 1954.  These wonderful parents raised two children, Teresa Ellen Deck (Bumgarner) and Carl Edward Deck, Jr.

After baseball, Ed worked for Colonial Bakery as a route salesman which entailed many hours and miles traveled.  Providing for a young family in search of a greater future, Ed went to work for Royal Typewriter in 1959 and began taking business classes through Drury University's night program.  He advanced at Royal becoming their Distribution Manager and received his business degree from Drury.  His wife and young children celebrated his college graduation.  In 1968, Ed began an opportunity in the field of distribution warehousing and the family moved to Reno, NV where he worked for Pacific Freeport Warehouse.  After rising to Vice President and gaining experience in warehousing and construction, Ed and Mary wanted to start their own business.  In 1974, leaving the Sierra Mountains and wonderful friendship still maintained today, Ed and family moved back to Springfield Missouri.

In the fall of 1974, with meager savings and a lot of ambition, Ed and Mary started Queen City Warehouse Corp. which is still in operation today.  Ed was involved early as a Cub Scout Master and baseball coach, then found time after establishing his business to give to the community he loved greatly serving on various boards such as Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce (President 1983), Empire Bank Board, St. John's Advisory Board, Springfield Junior Achievement, Springfield Traffic Club Board, American Warehousemen Assoc., Hickory Hills Country Club Board, and several others.  He was also a member of King's Way United Methodist Church and a 50-year pin Master Mason of the Riddick Lodge.  Ed was very honored to be named 1988 "Springfieldian of the Year" by the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce.

Ed loved hunting and fishing enjoying both often with family and friends.  While he and Mary were blessed to enjoy traveling for several years, some of their favorite times were simply with family and friends at Bull Shoals Lake.  His loss of enjoying the game of golf only increased his time watching baseball, particularly the St. Louis Cardinals.  Ed lived a very full life and loved his family and their accomplishments very much.

His daughter, Teresa Bumgarner, and his younger brother Harold Deck precede him in death.  Mary Ellen (Stanton), his loving wife of 62 years, survives him along with son Ed Deck, Jr., daughter-in-law Molly Deck, son-in-law Lyle Bumgarner, grandchildren Matthew Bumgarner (Jessica), Keary Deck Basecke (Jacob), Kathryn Deck Widrig (Ryan), Christina Bumgarner, Cal Deck (Carl Edward Deck III), and great-grandchildren Jackson Bumgarner-Lynch, Brayden Bumgarner, Colton Bumgarner, Jack Basecke, Maeve Basecke, and Liam Basecke.  Ed was also blessed with many in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, wonderful friends and neighbors.
