Calvin (Cal) William Pierce, 92, Springfield, passed away on Sunday, December 2, 2018 in his home. He was born August 30, 1926 in Thomasville, MO, the son of Edward F. and Emily (Todd) Pierce.
Cal was raised on a farm and enlisted in the US Navy at age 17. Achieving the rank of Petty Officer 2 nd Class, he proudly served with Torpedo Squadron 34 during World War II. His aircraft carrier, USS Monterey, was instrumental in securing Tokyo Bay in preparation for the surrender of Japan. He also served during the Korean Conflict, participating in patrol of the Yellow Sea. After his military service, Cal worked as a service technician with Montgomery Ward and Sears. The Montclair in Springfield was a special place for Cal. In his early retirement years he drove a bus for residents. He then made The Montclair his home and cherished his many friends. He was also a talented writer and enjoyed creating poems and short stories.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anne; two daughters, Linda Williams and Janice Pierce; two brothers, Edward and Ralph Pierce; and a sister, Jewell.
Cal is survived by his son, Jack Pierce; daughter, Carole Morgan; sister, Patsy Williams; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, December 7, 2018 in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, 5201 South Southwood, Springfield, MO 65804.
