Obituary

Bonnie passed away peacefully on February 28, 2016 with her children by her side. She was born in Sterling, Kansas on November 1, 1940 to Floyd L King and Velma (Brooks) King. She grew up in Lyons, Kansas and as a teenager enjoyed the hot Kansas sun while working as a lifeguard at the local swimming pool. Upon graduation from Lyons High School in 1958, she attended Colorado Women's College in Denver and earned an associate of arts and sciences degree. During college, she spent the summers working on Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs. From 1961 to 1963, Bonnie attended nursing school at the University of Kansas and worked in a lab conducting malaria research.

Bonnie possessed an unwavering sense of loyalty and commitment toward all that she held dear. She developed several lifelong friendships and established many extended families through her varied career(s). She was the "No. 1 assistant" at Brentwood Service Center, where she worked closely with the Wagoner family for 35 years. In 1987, Bonnie became a massage therapist at Lodge of the Four Seasons in Lake of the Ozarks. She joined the spa at Big Cedar Lodge a few years later and stayed until her retirement in October 2015. She was also a clinical supervisor at the Professional Massage Training Center. Bonnie was an active member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA). She was past chair of the AMTA's national benevolence sub committee and served on the national grievance commission. She was past president of the AMTA Missouri Chapter and chaired its education/membership committee. She received the AMTA Missouri Chapter Meritorious Award (1994) and President's Award (1997).

Bonnie embodied her mother's sense of decorum and tradition, and her father's dignity, independence, and love for nature; which combined to make Bonnie a graceful and elegant tomboy. She appreciated the simple beauty of the natural world and enjoyed travel. She instilled her love for nature and the outdoors in her kids through countless fishing, camping and hiking trips throughout the Ozarks. She would hike miles to hear the trickle of a spring and collect a rock (or several) along the way to remember the trip. As a native Kansan, Bonnie volunteered with the Symphony in the Flint Hills for a number of years to savor the beauty of the grasslands.

Bonnie's fierce independence and sheer determination enabled her to beat the odds and cheat cancer more than once. Her spirit remained strong even when her body was tattered and worn. We appreciate the kindness and compassion of Drs. Zolfaghari, Ellis, Crighton, and Albritton and their staff. We are grateful for the loving care that the Cox South NTICU nurse, Zane H. provided during her final hours.

She is survived by her children, Jim Massey and wife, Summer of Springfield, Tisha Martin and husband, Trevor of Boise, Idaho, Jeff Massey of St. Louis, Missouri, and Jared Massey of Springfield; grandchildren Jacob Austin, Sadie Martin and Greta Martin; nephew, Greg Schlappi and niece, Julie Kirkwood. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Sara (King) Schlappi and nephew, Randy Schlappi.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 4 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Gorman Scharpf Funeral Home at 1947 E. Seminole Springfield, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in memory of Bonnie to the Symphony in the Flint Hills, Inc. 331 Broadway Cottonwood Falls, KS 66845.
