Obituary

Robert Richard Thompson (Bob), 85, passed away at 4:30 am on September 20, 2016 in the Neighborhoods at Quail Creek with his wife Judy by his side. Bob was born in Springfield, Missouri on March 30, 1931 to Ruth (Ollmann) Thompson and Richard Christian Thompson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Charlotte Peterson Thompson, brother Donald Thompson, and grandson Samuel Wayne Shook.

He is survived by his wife, Judith Ann (Judy) of the home, daughter Kathy Ann Shook (Roger) of Oak Grove, AR, son Mark Robert Thompson (Susanne) of Silver Springs, MD, grandsons Joshua Robert Thompson of Washington D.C. and Jacob Andrew Thompson of Allentown, PA, sister Shirley Thompson Dyberg of Vacaville, CA, step daughters Elizabeth (Beth) Nickle and Pamela (Pam) Nickle, both of Springfield, brothers-in-law Robert Peterson (Elaine) of Austin, TX and William (Bill) Grier (Ellen) of Springfield, and several nieces and nephews.

Bob attended Central High School and graduated in 1949. He received his BS in Chemistry and Mathematics from Drury University in 1953. He received a PhD from Washington University in St. Louis in Organic Chemistry in 1957. Bob joined Amoco Research in Tulsa, OK in 1957 as a Research Scientist and retired in 1989. Bob moved to Springfield in 2001 to marry Judy. He was an avid Cardinals baseball fan. One of his prized possessions was an honorary contract with the Cardinals from 1958. Bob was a pilot and enjoyed many cross-country flights with his family. He also enjoyed flying remote controlled airplanes. Bob was handball champion at Drury during his undergraduate days and played semi-pro baseball. Bob was a member of First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, Twin Oaks Country Club, and several dance clubs.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 2:00 pm at First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception at the church. Arrangements are under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Drury University, 900 N. Benton, Springfield, MO 65802.
