Betty Jean Smith, 89 of Springfield passed away Friday, December 8, 2017 at 11:38 am in Mercy Hospital.
She was born March 11, 1928 in Rogersville, MO to Devina Cermit and Sarah Ann (Lassley) Smith. She married Carl Mincks and two children were born to this union. After only seven years of marriage Carl passed away. She later married Wilbert Smith also gaining a son and together they had a daughter.
Betty was fondly known as "The Cake Lady" because of her creativity in decorating cakes. She enjoyed reading and gardening, she grew beautiful flowers and tasty vegetables. She was a member of Grandview Baptist Church and enjoyed all her church activities. She loved doing anything with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and both spouses, she was also preceded in death by her son, Carl Gene Mincks; daughter-in-law, Penny Mincks; son-in-law, Dan Tabor; granddaughter, Cindy Witt; great-great-grandson, Anthony Witt; two brothers, Louie "Buck" and Bill Smith, Sister, Emma "Tootsie" Wheeler and her husband, Carl Wheeler.
Betty is survived by her sister, Edith "Polly" Davis; children, Dearld Smith and wife, Wanda, Virginia "Ginny" Tabor, and Alesia Traiteur and husband, Michael; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Smith and Bernice Smith; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and multitudes of friends.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at 10 am in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel with burial to follow in Palmetto Cemetery, Rogersville. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 12, 2017 from 6-8 pm in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grandview Baptist Church, 3208 N. Barnes, Springfield, MO 65803.
