Betty Mae Matthews, age 84, of Springfield, MO passed away on April 23, 2014 at Cox South Hospital. Betty was born in Butterfileld, MO on May 25, 1929. Betty lived on the family farm of her parents, Gobel and Lunda Ray, along with her siblings, Lavern, Tom and Sarah. She spent most of her life as a homemaker and care provider. In her early years she was a teacher at a rural school. As a reflection of her respect for everyone she invited children with disabilities into her classroom. Betty's life was filled with care and compassion for others. She spent many years providing care for her father, Gobel Ray. In her mid-70's she was an attendant for elderly disabled people. Later in life she was a resident at ManorCare Nursing Facility. Betty was the friend and counselor for many residents as well as staff. Her personality and optimism lifted those around her. Betty married Warren Montgomery Matthews on March 18, 1949. The legacy she has left behind includes her oldest son, Randy Matthews and his wife, Barbara; daughter, Cindy Matthews; daughter, Terri Price and her husband, Jim; son, Sam Walker-Matthews and his wife, Susan. At the moment of her passing her four children were by her side. Betty is survived by grandchildren, Jason, Ashley, Carrie, Matthew, Samuel and Grace. She was the proud great-grandmother of four: Cierra, Olivia, Jada and Valerie. A visitation for family and friends will be held at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, 1947 East Seminole, Springfield, MO on Sunday, April 27, 2014 from 2-4 p.m. Betty would request that in lieu of flowers, donations in her name be sent to The Residents Activity Fund, ManorCare Health Services, 2915 South Fremont Avenue, Springfield, MO 65804.
