Obituary

Bettie Rose Davis, 94, died August 11, 2015 at Springfield Rehabilitation Care Center after a long illness. She is preceded in death by her husband, James E. (Jim) Davis; her mother, Frances Bogardus; her adoptive father, William (Bill) Bogardus; her birth father, Charles Jenkins and by her brother, John W. (Johnny) Bogardus, who died in 2002. Bettie Rose was born October 19, 1920 in Springfield. She was raised in the family home at 820 Benton Avenue by her mother and her grandparents, N. Jay and Rose Lines Brite, who she knew as "Papa Jay" and "Mama Rose." Bettie Rose graduated from Greenwood High School in 1939, and in 1942 was married at the family home to Jim Davis, a Drury College graduate, then an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After moving several times as Jim completed his military obligations, the couple settled in New York City where Jim completed a M.B.A. at Columbia University and was subsequently employed by that University for several years. Then, they moved back to Springfield for good, where Jim began a long career with the Paul Mueller Company. He passed away April 5, 2003. Bettie Rose loved to travel. She and her husband went often to Europe, Hawaii and spent the winters in California, and frequently back to New York City to visit family and friends and their favorite steakhouse, Frankie & Johnnie's. Bettie Rose also loved the family lake house in Cape Fair, MO, where she made many friends at the local Extension Club and Eagles Lodge. In Springfield Bettie Rose was a member of Twin Oaks Country Club, Springfield Dance Club and an art club. But right behind her love for her family perhaps her fondest passion was bridge. Following in her mother's footsteps, Bettie Rose was a fine bridge player and belonged to several bridge clubs. Decades later, giving up bridge due to increasing health concerns was perhaps her most difficult concession to aging. Bettie Rose is survived by her two children, James W. (Jim) Davis, of Nixa, MO, born May 2, 1953 and Elizabeth R. (Cissy) Davis of Springfield, born March 19, 1956. They were always fondly known by their parents as "Jimmy and Cissy." The family would like to express gratitude to the numerous people who provided loving care to Bettie Rose in her final years: The staff and residents at The Gardens Assisted Living, the staff and residents at Springfield Rehabilitation and most recently the staff of Seasons Hospice. Special appreciation in particular goes to Bettie Rose's good friend, Nancy McDaniel, of Halfway, MO, who has stood by her side for many years. Arrangements are under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held Friday, August 14, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Hazelwood Cemetery. No visitation is planned. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bettie Rose's name may be made to Seasons Hospice, 1831 West Melville Rd., Springfield, MO 65803.
