She attended an all girls catholic school in Brooklyn where she graduated high school. She had one sister Marguerite. After graduating, Bertha worked a short stint as an AT&T operator in Brooklyn. She and a high school friend decided to join the United States Marine Corps as the war was in full swing. She joined on March 8, 1943. After her schooling she began serving her country at USMC headquarters in Washington D.C. While working there she met her future husband, Leonard Johnson. She and Leonard were married on March 15, 1944. Bertha was discharged in August 1944. Bertha and Leonard's son, Leonard, Jr. was born in March 1945. After the war they moved to Springfield, MO. Bertha later attended nursing school at St. John's and became an LPN. She worked at the hospital in the pediatric ward and in a few doctor's offices. In the early 1960's the family bought a house boat on Bull Shoals Lake and spent many happy hours there on the weekends fishing and relaxing.
