Barbara Gideon Ormsbee passed away peacefully the evening of Monday, September 5, at St. John's Hospital. Wife of LaVelle (Red) Ormsbee for sixty years. Born in Forsyth on June 1, 1932, she was the eldest child of The Hon. Robert and Elma Gideon. Barbara was an honors graduate of Drury College, where she met her husband-to-be, Red. She received a Master's Degree in Education, and was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. After fourteen wonderful years living in Branson, the family moved to Springfield where she was a gifted teacher at Cherokee Middle School for 25 years. Barbara touched, guided and inspired the young lives of many. She had a special talent for teaching current events, often bringing speakers into her classroom. She also delighted in teaching her students about the law, even allowing her fourth-graders to conduct mock trials. In recognition of those efforts, she was awarded The E.A. Richter Award for excellence in law-related education by the Missouri Bar Advisory Committee on Citizenship Education. She also had a deep interest in politics. Barbara was actively involved for many years in the Greene County Republican Party, for which she served as secretary. She also enjoyed travel. Among her fondest memories were summers spent in Boulder, while Red attended the University of Colorado Graduate School in Music. Barbara's enduring legacy is as a loving and caring daughter, spouse, sister, mother, grandmother and teacher. She was a gracious and positive role-model for her children, grandchildren, and many hundred students. Her earthly presence will be missed, but her legacy and many special memories shall be cherished and will live on as an inspiration for a life well lived. She is survived by her son Arthur (Chris) Ormsbee of Rogersville, his wife Nancy, and their sons Vinnie and Carmine Ingenito; her daughter Melissa Fogelberg of Orono, MN, her husband Paul and their daughters, Emily, Julia, and Sara; her siblings Robert "Bobby" Gideon (wife Mary Lou) of Hermitage, Marilyn Parker (husband John) of Columbia, Johnny Gideon (wife Carolyn) of Springfield, Wendell Gideon (wife Jane Ann) of Columbia, Janet Bowlds (husband Don) of St. Louis, and Michael Gideon (wife Janis). Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 11, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home with The Rev'd Constance Tyndall, a neighbor and family friend officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Burial will be Monday, September 12, at 9:00 a.m. in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Grupo Latino (417-886-1348).
