Avis Pauline Smith was born to Henry and Kizzie Smith in Reilly Springs, TX February 18, 1920. Outliving four brothers and one sister, she died Thursday, April 9, 2015 in her Springfield, MO home at the age of 95. A hairdresser in Sulphur Springs, TX, Avis met and married Raymond L Baker in 1941. He passed in 1983. In 1986 she married Lloyd W Ficke. He passed in 2008. Avis loved her church family at Hamlin Baptist Church. She loved to quilt and her many hand stitched quilts are cherished near and far. Vegetable and flower gardening, painting, making apple and gooseberry pies, trout fishing with Loyd and Ruth Turner, and spending time with her family rounded out her long full life. Avis also maintained the art of letter writing and sending well wishes to a long list of previous clients, neighbors, friends and family. Until the time of her death she never lost her sense of humor or ability to win at Dominoes. Avis P Baker Ficke is survived by: son John Baker, family Gregg, Lisa and Kaleigh; daughter Ann Baker Vogel (Charles) and family Aimee and Jerry Doubek and Alexa Morrison, Sara and Jessica Parrish, Codi, Curt and Ryan Hall; daughter Nan Baker Smith (Ben) and family Bill, Melissa, and Camden Darby, Dan and Caroline Smith and sons, Rex and Finn Smith; step grand, great and great-great grandchildren; special sister-in-law Pearl Baker; and Lloyd's daughter Barbara Ficke Niffenegger and her children Lee, Laura, Gary, David and their families. Graveside services will be held at Greenlawn North Cemetery Friday April 17, at 1:00PM, with Calvin Maberry officiating. In lieu of flowers Avis requested donations to Hamlin Baptist Church 829 W Atlantic Springfield, MO 65803, or Integrity Hospice 2960 N Eastgate, Springfield, MO 65803. The funeral is under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.
