Obituary

Audrey Johnson Gibbs, born in Valley Park, MO on June 7, 1922, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2018, at James River Nursing Home in Springfield, MO, at the age of 96. Her parents were John and Anna Psora. Near the beginning of World War II, Audrey met Rodney Johnson while he was stationed at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis.  After his discharge from the Army, they were married on Dec. 11, 1945 and later had two daughters, Jacqueline and Judy.  In addition to managing the family farm at Huzzah, MO, she and Rodney both were employed by Cuba Shoe Company.   After Rodney's death in 1981, Audrey reconnected with Claude "Hack" Gibbs, her sweetheart from Valley Park High School, who was also a widower with two daughters, Beverly Puffer and Betty Miller (Harp). Hack and Audrey were married in 1983. Hack, a member of the 34th Bomb Group, was a World War II veteran as well. After 32 years of marriage, Hack passed away in 2015.

Audrey is survived by her daughter, Judy Ollis; son-in-law, Paul Cheatham; grandchildren, Chris Ollis and wife Jessica, Matthew Ollis, Allison Ellis and husband John, Chuck Puffer and wife Tracey, and Corey Morrison and husband Ray. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Shaun and Sam Ellis, Morgan Puffer, and Fletcher and Campbell Ollis, along with her sister-in- law, Mildred Gahr and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Rodney Johnson, brother Jim Psora, second husband Hack Gibbs, daughter Jacqueline (Johnson) Cheatham, and sons-in-law, Joe Ollis and Charlie Puffer.

Audrey's life revolved around her family. Despite a full work day and the responsibilities of managing the small family farm, she and Rodney attended every event in which their daughters were involved throughout their lives. They offered the same support to members of their extended family; attending every wedding, graduation, anniversary, or other momentous occasion. Audrey continued this tradition for the rest of her life.  She also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at Huzzah Baptist Church, where she was a member.

During World War II, she worked at Small Arms, a manufacturer of ammunitions in St. Louis. Later in life, she and Hack  enjoyed attending the annual reunions for his 34th Bomb Group. She was an expert at sewing and quilting, and she enjoyed gardening and canning. She was an equally talented cook and will be remembered for generations to come for her "light rolls," which were a frequent request by family members at dinners and reunions.

Most importantly, Audrey's legacy is that of a generous, kind, and loving spouse, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She will be remembered as such by all who knew her and were loved by her.

A memorial service will be held on July 21, at 11 a.m., at Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment of her ashes will be at Sanders Huzzah Cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to the Sanders Cemetery Association, Clark Baker, Treasurer, 111 Trainer Lane, Cuba, MO 65453.
