Obituary

Ashley Jackson Whyzmuzis, age 27, was spirited away from this world on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at St. John's Hospital. Though his life was short, his life was never "short" of laughter, smiles or adventures. He was born on June 7, 1984 in Chicago to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Whyzmuzis. He was a part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Central High School graduating in 2003 as class valedictorian with Summa Cum Laude honors. He spent his summers at Central High going to Missouri Boys State, and taking part in a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit Brazil as part of the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. For community service he would spend time at the Kitchen and the Missouri Hotel, but his passion was performing science experiments at the Discovery Center where he was known as the "Bubble Man" for his crazed bubble experiments. He accepted a scholarship to Baylor University in Waco, Texas as a Pre-Med student. Shortly after, he had to quit school in order to take care of his father who had become ill with brain cancer. He attended Drury University, but because of his father's medical bills he had to work to put himself through school which caused him to delay his graduation. However, working 25 to 30 hours a week did not stop him from achieving academic success and he became a Drury Ambassador because of it. Though he was a member of many science and honor clubs, he loved being a Drury Ambassador the most. Ashley graduated from Drury University with a double major in Biology and Chemistry with the highest honors. Prior to graduating from Drury, he had spent last summer as a medical research intern at the prestigious Max Planck Institute in Freiburg, Germany. Only ten people in the world were chosen to attend Max Planck Institute to do research - he was one out of two Americans chosen with the other being from Harvard University. After completing his internship he was offered a graduate position at the Universittsklinikum Benjamin Franklin in Berlin, but would instead attend the Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. Ashley is survived by his brokenhearted family; his mother, father, sister, Tilly, as well as the pets, with his favorite being a white cat named Fuji. He will be terribly missed by most all of the Two Amigos who will always remember his motto: "aim for the stars, even if you miss, you'll land on the moon". Funeral mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 1, 2011 in Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Msgr. Thomas E. Reidy celebrant, under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. No visitation in planned. Online condolences may be left at www.gormanscharpf.com.
